I just downloaded the iPad update and you can still not edit a students name. Why?
You have to delete the student and create them again, if the name is wrong.

    • Aaron says:

      Sean,
The short answer to your question is “time”. The ability to alphabetize student names was a priority for many of our users. In order to do this well, we will need to split “student name” into “first name” and “last name”. This will cause a change in the database structure and a loss of user data. We worked out a temporary measure allowing the user to alphabetize names that works if the user enters the students name with the last name first. Because of this, it was important to get the Update to users before they entered their class lists so they wouldn’t need to start over. Although deleting and re-entering a student’s name is inconvenient, this alphabetization feature does allow the user to put the “re-entered” name back in order. That is a huge improvement.

Hopefully, now that the time sensitive update is in place, we can begin to work on some other improvements throughout the year. I agree that the ability to edit the student’s name is important. I will need to get that fixed soon.

Thanks for using our product! I hope it serves you well this school year. Please feel free to send us suggestions at any time.

  2. Steven Stein says:

When I load the grade book I cannot scroll down to the last few name. I cannot enter in grades for those studetns. It just bounces back up to the last one before I slide my finger to to scroll to the others. Please help?

    • Aaron says:

      Steven,
I am investigating this and hope to have it fixed soon. Thanks for bringing it to our attention and for your patience.
      Aaron

      • Steven Stein says:

Sweet! Thanks this App really would work perfect for the type of class I teach where socratic seminar is a regular thing and the studetns are graded on how much they participate in discussion. I use the app to keep track of how much a students contributed to class discussion over a semester. It is really nice to be able to show the students the graphs. It will really cut down on the students trying to barter for grades and a visual way for them to see just how much harder they have to work. If you are up for suggestions, a way to edit the custom buttons would be great. Thanks for creating this App!

        • Aaron says:

          Steven,
The gradebook problem has been corrected. You can expect the update on Itunes in about 7 days. Thanks! I’m always open to suggestions. I am curious what you mean regarding the editing of custom buttons… you should be able to create a button to say anything you like. Can you clarify this? It would be much appreciated.

Our next improvement will be some changes to how the gradebook handles data that should help the app run more smoothly. I am very excited about this as well.

It sounds like you have some cool things happening in your classroom. I’m glad we could help you out. Please keep the suggestions coming.
If you get a chance to write us a positive review on the App store, it would be much appreciated.
          Thanks!

          • Steven Stein says:

When I create a custom button, and start to time stamp the behaviors and interventions there is no way to change the button you alread created without starting a new button, which throws off the graph in the report. I now have two different sections of the pie graph where I just want one.

          • Aaron says:

            Steven,
Let me think about this a little. Thanks for the suggestion!
            Aaron

  3. Steven Stein says:

    Hey,
Sorry to bother you again but I have one more thing that would help. I meant to hit the button on a certain behavior I noticed, but I forgot to hit the button. I realized it today, so when I hit the button there is no way to fix the timestamp so it can be changed to the accurate day and time. A way to edit the time and day would make things more accurate on the reports I give parents.

    • Aaron says:

      Steven,
So, I just sent you a really long reply that got deleted when my browser locked up. This one will have to be shorter…

This suggestion has come up before. The short solution is to make a note of the discrepancy in the “notes” section. The real solution is much more involved as the user interface has to be redesigned to allow an “Edit” screen. That may take a while.

I’m actually working on a new design that we may eventually offer as a more advanced alternative to Classroom Manager. It will be more visual with each student having a desk with their photo on it. Selecting a student desk will take you to a “Data Card” where all their information can be accessed including behaviors, interventions, praise, attendance, and special accomodations. The app will also include the ability to track how often you call on a student in class as well as a randomizer to randomly select students for questioning. It should be cool, but may be off in the future.

Please keep the suggestions coming. They are very helpful.

  4. F.Paul says:

    Hi Aaron,

I just realized that the app does not save my notes. I want to be specific about what I am doing when I choose an intervention. Is this something that will change?

    Ms. Paul

    • Aaron says:

      Ms. Paul,
Can you please be more specific about what you are trying to save and how you are doing it. You should be able to click “notes”, type whatever you need to, and then click “save”. Is this not working for you? I have been unable to duplicate the issue you are having.
      Thanks!
      Aaron

      • F.Paul says:

        Good morning,

When I click on notes. The previous notes are still there. I deleted it, and added a new note thinking the previous one will still be there but it seems to just replace it with the new note. So I have just started adding to what is already there. I am not sure if I am explaining it correctly.

        Ms. Paul

        • Aaron says:

          Ms. Paul,
The way you are using the App now is how the Notes field is designed to function. It does not create separate entries for each event… rather it is like having a sheet of paper where you can jot notes to yourself or others. Deleting things from this field will cause them to be lost from record. At this point, there is no plan to change this to function as you are suggesting, but I will take it into consideration for a future build. Thanks!
Please let me know if this answers your question. As always, feel free to contact us at any time with questions or concerns.
          Thanks!
          Aaron

  5. Jenn Doyle says:

    Hi Aaron,

My teachers and I just got our new iPads. We are looking to streamline our behavior tracking and grade reporting. Before we purchase this app, which looks exactly like what we need (especially with the customization of behaviors) we were wondering if the data collected on one iPad will be able to be accessed by another iPad and then downloaded all into one report that includes a students performance and behaviors for all of his classes.

    Thanks,
    Jenn

    • Aaron says:

      Mrs. Doyle,
Thank you for considering Classroom Manager for your needs. In order for the data on one Ipad to be shared with another in the manner you are suggesting a separate desktop or server component would be necessary to which the data would need to be uploaded and compiled. The data would then need to be sent back to the individual Ipads. At this point, we have not developed this functionality. Classroom Manager was originally designed as a tool for individual teachers to utilize so the compiling of the data was not a priority. However, anticipating that this might be helpful, Classroom Manager was equipped with the ability to export data as a CSV file which can be imported into Excel allowing you to compile the data yourselves.

I hope this helps. If you do decide to give Classroom Manager a try, please let me know. I would be very interested in hearing how it meets your needs.
      Thanks!
      Aaron

  6. Steven Stein says:

    Hey,
I am trying to email the pdf of the reports to my self to print. When I open them I only get page 1 of the report. The graphs and gradebook page does not come with it. I have conferences next Wendsday. It would be nice to give the parents a hard copy of my report.
    Thanks,
    Steven

    • Aaron says:

      Steven,
I attempted to duplicate the problem you are having, but have been unsuccessful. Here are a couple things to try. First, check to see if the memory on your ipad is full or nearly full. This will sometimes cause problems with what gets saved. If you make extra room, it may solve the problem. Second, try opening the PDF on your device. Do all the pages appear when you do this? If so, try emailing it to a different email address like your home email or a different teacher. Finally, if none of this works, try emailing a PDF of another student and see if you get the same results. It sounds as though you may have already done this. If all else fails, please email one of the PDFs to me at mathappsllc@gmail.com so I can take a look at it and share it with my programmer.

Any fix I find will take more than a week to be approved by Apple so I can’t help with conferences next week if it is a bug in the program. A short term solution would be to open the report on your ipad, take a screen shot, and email yourself the image. That way you will at least have something to give the parents.

If you get a chance, I’d love to hear what responses you get to these reports from the parents.
      Tanks for your patience.

  7. Natalie says:

I cannot get my grades to add. I have looked for directions on how to do it but cannot figure it out. There is no home button. I thought this would be great to use but it seems like it pauses when I try to type anything. Help

    • Aaron says:

      Natalie,
It sounds as though there are 2 different issues here.

      1. To enter grades into the gradebook, you first need to define the assignment. Click, “Assignment 1” at the top of the gradebook to go to the page to enter the assignment information. Once the information is typed, it is automatically loaded to the gradebook. Press “back” to return to the gradebook. Once on the gradebook page, you should be able to touch the cell where you want the grade to appear and then type the score. I was just testing on my device and it does seem a little sluggish. I’ll try to speed this up in the next update. I am not having the issue when I am using the “Intervention” function. Please let me know if this explanation helps.

      2. You are correct that there is no home button. This was one of my first designs and it didn’t occur to me to put one in. You can use the “Open Class” button as a home button, however, and once a class is open, the navigation should be pretty easy.

Thanks for trying out Classroom Manager. Please let me know if other issues arrive. I will do my very best to help.

  8. Tammy says:

I’m rating this on its potential to be a great app for teachers so I hope I’m not disappointed or proven wrong!  Here’s my recommendations thus far:  1. Title of each class needs to be editable, for that matter make everything editable because we certainly can make mistakes or change our mind!  2. Need ability to add students to different classes so you don’t have to type the same student multiple times…this is important to track student behavior and teacher interventions by subject, 3. Custom behaviors (such as “didn’t take meds”)  or interventions don’t show up…neither do notes, unless I’m doing something wrong here, 4. Increase number of behaviors and interventions it allows you to choose from (more than the 13), 5. Add to student database section: Date of IEP, 3-year Re-eval due, Disability, Area of Disability, and Related Services.  6. Alphabetical sort by last name, as this is the way we are used to viewing our students, 7.  Add the capability to edit the time and date stamp for documenting at a later time…accuracy is important and we don’t always have the time to document at the time of the occurring behavior.
This app truly has the potential to make a tremendous impact on our daily routine of documenting everything!  Please consider these recommendations and upgrading the program’s customization ability…I’ll be happy to pilot it along the way!

    • Aaron says:

      Tammy,
Thanks for purchasing Classroom Manager. I am glad to hear that you see a lot of potential in it. It sounds as though you have some great ideas for improving the app as well as some functionality concerns.

Here is some background on the app. A little over a year ago, I began looking for Ipad tools to use in my classroom and found that a lot of what I wanted simply wasn’t available. That’s when I started MATHapps. Classroom Manager was my first design and, so far, has been the most popular. As my first design there are a LOT of improvements that can be made. This summer my focus was on creating a version for the Iphone/Itouch. This was released about a month ago. Additionally, we added a more appealing background, and “Incidences over Time” bar graph, and some minor improvements to the Ipad version. Some of these may address a couple of your concerns. Some of these changes (along with the upgrade to IOS6) may have caused some of your concerns as well.

I’ll try and answer your concerns one at a time.
      1. This is a good idea. The challenge is the structure of the database. I’m not sure if this can be done with a minor fix… it may involve a top-to-bottom restructuring of how the data is stored. I’ll look into it.
      2. This is a great idea. Perhaps this could be done by adding an import feature….
      3. I was unaware of this bug, but will work on fixing it immediately.
      4. You should be able to choose from a relatively infinite number of behaviors and interventions using the “other” button. The main page will only display 13 at a time. In order to increase this number, I would need to decrease the size of each button, making them more difficult to select. What number would you suggest as a compromise between these two challenges?
      5. This is a great idea. I am planning to include something like it in a new app with a working title of “Total Classroom”. With certain changes, it is easier to start from scratch than to change the current app.
      6. We’ve been working on this one. Again, it goes to the database structure. The user currently enters the student name as a single entry instead of first name, last name. It is difficult to split the names once they are entered this way. I can split the cell, but then current users will probably experience corruption of their current data and will need to start over. I’d rather wait until summer break when teachers are getting new lists anyway. You can work around this issue by entering student names with the last name first. The “ABC” button in the left pane will sort these.
      7. I’ve had several requests for this feature and am trying to think of a way to do this without rewriting the entire app. Currently, the user only sees this data in PDF form. I would need to change the way the data is presented to the user for this to work.

I hope this addresses some of your concerns. Thank you for your interest in Classroom Manager. If you have other thoughts or are interested in seeing some of our future products, I’d love to have some outside feedback. Please let me know.

      Thanks!
      Aaron

    • Aaron says:

      Tammy,
I hope your school year is off to a good start. I’m sure you are anxiously awaiting Thanksgiving break. You contacted MATHapps LLC in October of 2012 regarding some recommendations for Classroom Manger. I am happy to let you know that we have addressed several of these. I am emailing specifically to let you know that the next update, in about 1 week, will give you the ability to adjust the time/date stamp of behaviors. Additionally, we hope to have an update in place before the end of the year that includes a redesign of the behaviors/interventions page that should allow for more behaviors to be displayed at a time.

I hope Classroom Manager has served you well and am confident that these next couple updates will improve your experience significantly. Please touch base and let us know how things are working for you.

  9. F.Paul says:

    Good evening Aaron,

I am about to upgrade my ipad and want to know if I back it up on my laptop, will I be able to access all of the data already on the app on the new ipad. Also, will this app work on ipad mini?

    Thank you,

    Ms. Paul

    • Aaron says:

      Ms. Paul,
That is a great question. I believe that when you back up to Icloud the information is saved for you. When you get your new device, sync the new Ipad to the old account and reinstall Classroom Manager. Before you sync the device, look on the Apps page of Itunes, there should be a place at the bottom of the screen showing the old Classroom Manager data. Check this and then sync.

Having said that, this is a feature I have not tested for a VERY long time and the iOS updates may have created some problems. I would get to a natural stopping place in your record-keeping (end of quarter?) and then send yourself a PDF of the pertinant informations. That way if there is a problem, you will have the hard copy. In the meantime, I will go back and retest this. I hope this information helps. It is not an ideal answer, but it is the best I can offer at the moment. :0)

All Ipad Apps work on the Ipad mini (which was a brilliant design feature by Apple) so you should have no trouble.
Do you plan to sell your old Ipad? Which model is it? I’m just curious.

I would love your feedback on how Classroom Manager has helped you in your classroom. Additionally, if you have had positive results, please consider giving us a positive review on the App store. Thanks!
      Aaron
      Thanks!

        Hi Aaron,

I hope this works. As for sending myself a hard copy is there a way to generate a report for a whole class, or must I do it individually. I have over seventy students for which I am keeping data on. I can narrow it down to the students in the RTI process but I would much prefer to have all the info I have I input thus far. As for the app, I love it! It is a useful tool for monitoring interventions. I read that you might be upgrading it, will this be available for those who have already purchased your app? I currently have a 32 gab ipad 2. I am interested in getting the mini. I am selling it to off set the cost of the new one. Thank you for your assistance!

        Ms. Paul

        • Aaron says:

          Ms. Paul,
At this point, there is no way to generate a report for the whole class. This is one of the most requested features and is near the top of my “to-do” list. I plan to take this up right after I finish my current app “MathToolBox”, an interactive whiteboard that incorporates common math clip art and the ability to record lessons. When I do finish the upgrade, it will be free to users who already have Classroom Manager.

I’m glad to hear that Classroom Manager has been so useful for you. I wish you all the best in your school year.

Aaron.

I bought this app, and I started entering data on students. But, when I save the report I have two issues:
    One, when I save it as a CSV, it will only send an email with a PDF attachment (not the CSV);
Two, when I send the PDF, and I open it up, it will only show so many behavior and interventions. It will scroll down to show me all that I have recorded when I am in the app, but it does not show when it is in the PDF attachment.
How do I get all of the information to show up in the PDF? I need to be able to transfer the information over into a report, and I need to be able to send the information to parents.

    iPad mini with Retina
    IOS 7.1.2

Just purchased and created a practice class and entered a student. When going to gradebook, cannot edit or add assignments. Trying to edit “Assignment 1” I can enter the assignment, point value, due date, and category, but then it does nothing. I hit the okay button and it does nothing. If I hit the “back” button it goes out and saves nothing. 3/5 times it will go out of the app altogether after hitting that back button.

Also, trying to “add new category” the box comes up and I can type it in, when I hit “ok” it does not save it.

I would really love to use this app in my class. Help would be greatly appreciated.
